<<I have heard conflicting reports about availability on these. I know a few years ago they stopped selling them, and recently I have heard they are available again.>> They are available. <<I have had very good success with Boston Engine rebuilds over the years with brand new AMC heads.>>
As in any rebuilt engine any work performed can be spotty as you mentioned. BB isn't the almighty, and he makes mistakes too. I've seen his work and am not at all impressed. He's no better no worse than anybody else doing engine work. << A nation-wide warranty is great to have, but through the VW dealer? That means you are going to depend on a VW dealer to: 1. Do a good job on the engine install (sound of me laughing).>> Don't laugh too hard or long. There are sill a few around that actually have some old timer's that enjoy ( ? ) woking on the older Vanagon's. This you'll have to do some research on. ( If you want to pay their shop rate for an engine installation ,I sure wouldn't )
<<2. Get you a replacement engine in a timely manner if you do have a break down (let's laugh some more).>> Another depends. depends on the service writer, the service manager, and the parts manager all collectivly working together. You have to understand that there are more vehicles on the block than just your Vanagon. I know Ken,you'd drop everything your currently into and get a warrantee engine job done right now. I don't believe that, and know better.
<<3. Actually not abuse you by added costs of things "not covered under the warranty" (add crying sound here).>> Here's a tricky subject, and this can happen anywhere engine work is done. If a hose blew, is it the engine's fault? Well Ok,then if in fact the hose blew and if a engine hose blew whose fault is that? I'd say the installer for not at least suggesting that when the engie was put in. If there is a notation on the RO that the customer was informed of weak hoses, well you know who is responsable then. There is all kinds loopholes, and if you have a good relationship with your local VW dealer, I highly doubt they will spank you if something really happened bad. I'd much rather have a factory warrantee that an out of town, out of sight out of mind deal on the internet. I do know where VW lives. BB and AVP, and brand X, and XYZ, motor's, I don't. |
