Ben,
When my water pump failed it had scored a  large divot across the
block. I replaced the water pump without filling the gouge and have
had no colling issues since (about 69k mi). I suppose you could do a
JB Weld on it, but it doesn't seem necessary.

I'll try to dig up some good archive stuff on water pump replacement
for www.vanagonauts.com. So much to do, so little time ;)
