Having been thru this several times over 30 + years w/ aircooled engines, I agree w/ Ron's explanation of how things go to hell in a hand basket. There are so many variables, opinions, & ways to tell the story, that there is no way to tell what the "whole" story is w/o being omniscient.

The only way to avoid this is to have single source responsibility for rebuild, remove & replace, all new parts provided by the rebuilder/installer, etc. Not possible all the time, not cheap, but in the long run if you have problems, cheaper than doing things your self or subbing out part of the work.
