Subject: Vanagon GL 1986 - Odometer problem
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

I have a 1986 Vanagon GL with a weird Odometer problem. The Gear and shaft that the Odometer wheels ride on Migrates out and drops a little. It is Very Apparent on the Odometer, since the nubmers have visibly moved back away from the faceplate on one side. Last time I fixed this, Last year, December, I roughened up the shaft with sandpaper where it engages the last wheel. That worked until Recently. Now it is doing this migrating thing again, and the sandpaper track lasts about 2 days. Eventually I will pony up the $120 for the local Speedo show to rebuild it.(This is the shop recommended by my Mechanic, whom I trust implicitly) Since we have been having 100 degree weather here, I am wondering if this has something to do with it.

My Main Question is for anyone who has been inside this speedo. Is there a little piece of plastic, screwed into the frame that prevents this gear from migrating? There was one in there, last time I repaired this, but it looked like a kludge, and I left it out. I can fab another one, and I may just to stop this problem.

Any Ideas?

Thanks All, Matt
