If you get the R-134 adapter valves from VW, they fit and work perfectly. They now even have a conversion kit that also includes the filter/dryer. The 3/8-24 port in question was the old R12 fitting. The industry went to the different fitting due to people connecting the cheap recharge kits/cans to the high pressure and having the cans rupture causing some serious injuries.

You can remove the 3/8"-24 UNF adapters and service the ports with the old R12 fittings. If you make sure your compressor is properly labeled as having R134a then it shouldn't present any problems. I've found the 134 adapters to be faulty in many ways. Cheaply made. Valves don't set at proper position. You now have two valves on each port that never seem to work as a pair. Fill valves have cheap seals and leak as you fill.
