Wil,
I started to respond to this at work, where I cannot respond to the
entire list. Post disappeared, so I'll try again.
I get a kick out of those folks who, without seeing, hearing, touching,
or in any way following up state categorically that it must be thus and
so. There are several conditions which will lead to clutch shudder,
including bad mounts, oil on the clutch, and several others that have
been mentioned by other list members. I have chased that elusive
problems a few times on my vans (mostly geriatrics, BTW), and was told
by a tranny rebuilder to always look for worn T/O bearing actuator arms
(some call this a yoke).
The surface which the T/O bearing rests should be a nice gently curve,
so that when you actuate the clutch, the bearing is always supported.
If the tops of the curves are worn off (you'll understand when you see
them), the bearing will rapidly rock up and down, giving you shudder.
This is my vote of what to look for.
BTW, shuddering will not really hurt anything, and unless you have other
bad clutch symptoms, you do not need to do this job immediately, but can
put it off till it is more convenient.
