The cable play can be adjusted at either end. The valve end has a pita clip you can remove and then slide the cable sheath to give more or less play as needed. The clip can be a bear to get back on without deforming it. At the dash lever end you can loosen a clamp bolt and slide the sheath either way to give more or less play. The bolt can be reached through the I.C. hole but it may help if the ashtray and radio are removed.

It is common for the wire part of the cable to get a bend in it at the dash lever end. This keeps the cable from moving as far as it should. Check this first and try straightening it. A new cable does not cost much either.
