When my kids were smaller, I used a bedside protector.  I forget which brand it was, maybe Graco.  You probably can buy them at Wal-Mart, Target, Babys R Us, etc.

Anyways, it is basically a plastic frame with netting in-between.  At either end is a jointed L shape, which is also hinged.  The lower horizontal L portion slides in between your matresses and the upper vertical section is what holds the net and frame.  In this Vanagon, I placed the lower L piece between the mattress and woodt.  I kept it stored, folded flat at the back of the upper bunk.

Don't know if it's the best or safest solution, but I slept better at night with it there.  It will at least keep them from going forward.  I'm not sure what to do about them rolling off onto the canvas.
