Here's a twist on Van security. A friend of mine takes his van out in the boonies frequently and rather than locking it up tight, he he parks it in the open and leaves all the doors and hatches open(except during foul weather, but few crooks steal when it's raining, just like few cops write speeding tickets when it's raining!)). It gives the would be crook the impression that someone isn't too far away and he's never had anything ripped off and the added plus is his van's glass has never been broken out either. A little extreme, but it's working.
