There was an old Vanagon Joker westfalia near me that had the same thing. In addition to that it had expanded metal grate screens over all the windows except the front windshield. It looked ridiculous and must have been difficult to see through all that metal. The van was imported by some germans for their tour of north america. The van broke down and ending up staying here. I remember looking at this thing and thinking "what the heck do these people think it's like here in north america"?

Gary Lee who's van has been broken into, but does not have anything worth stealing so is not too worried. http://www.telusplanet.net/public/gary2a/vw.htm
