Subject:      trashed 81 manual transmission.

On my first trip in my '81 air-cooled 4-speed manual Vanagon, the
transmission transformed itself into shrapnel.  Does anyone know what years
of transmission can be swapped into my rig with no overly wild engineering
problems?  I know somebody that's got a burned-up '79 van that they think
still has a good transmission.  Would it fit?
