Subject: FS 90 GL Project & extra parts-some syncro specific
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed
Hello Vanagon Folks!
The time has come for me to kick this vanagon addiction once and for all. I
am offering my beloved first vanagon (and hopefully last vanagon) for sale
along with all the extra parts I have collected over the years from my
various syncros, westys and GLs that have occupied my attention and devotion
for the last 8 years. All the other vanagons have been sold, given away or
parted out and this one has been sitting at my parents house in Southern
California for over a year. I live in Northern California now and have not
had the time or energy to get it running again.
The Van: White 90 GL w/auto trans. fiberglass body trim and bumpers,
spoiler, grey interior, body has very few little dings and paint cleans up
well with the exception of the silver trim pieces which are oxidizing. There
is a little rust on the passenger side sliding window frame area, but it is
a California van. Has working electric mirrors, (comes with extra switches
just in case), tach, clock, odo, dash all works. interior is in great shape
with the exception of one arm rest which my boston terrier used as a chew
toy (comes with extra front seat parts including four grey adjustable
armrests to use as replacements). The van has 150,426 miles on the body. It
has a performance chip in the 22D ICU (one from the Australian group
purchase of a few years back).
The transmission: was rebuilt by fastforward about 75K ago. I have a spare
trans from a junkyard and an extra torque converter and flex plate.
The engine: the original engine did not pass it's last smog test and was
starting to leak at the head gaskets. I decided it was time to delve into
more major work, I pulled the engine myself (yes a girl can do this, you
guys taught me on this list!) I had just finished parting out my beloved 86
Syncro that had been totaled in front of my house by a drunk and had good
heads from it to put on my 90. So I got the gasket kit and spent about a
month doing that project. Well the van still didn't pass smog. I ended up
taking that engine out and putting it in a 89 bluestar I had purchased from
an impound lot without an engine. I was planning to sell the bluestar to a
friend from Oregon if she could find an engine but she couldn't so I just
gave her the engine from my 90 and told her it had problems and would need
work. The 90 sat without an engine for a year at my old house before being
towed to my parent's place.
I bought an engine from a junk yard because now I needed all the peripherial
parts too. the engine had a warranty but I did not have time to finish
installation during the warranty period and it turned out to have no power.
the junkyard allowed me to return it for another and had a engine from a
fire which they said was good. I cleaned up that engine, put a new
waterpump, new fuel injection lines, hoses, gaskets, etc. but broke the
plastic connector for the distributor at the very end and couldn't start it
up and had to go back to NoCal to work. I bought a rebuild kit a few months
ago from Ken at Vanagain and when I flew down last week brought it and
rebulit the distrib. I put the distributor in and charged up the battery and
found that the engine is bound up. It could be a stuck valve or a rusted
piston, It only turns so far around and sticks, I don't know, I don't have
any more time or money to put into it. I have been out of work for medical
reasons and just don't have the strength for this kind of work right now.
The extra Parts: Spare engine block with broken oil filter stem (from 86
syncro wreck) The special syncro pre-dust filter is installed on the van.
spare AFM and rubber parts, spare ICU computer (from 87 syncro possible
short not D code), aluminum thermostat housing from 86 syncro, rear window
glass and gasket, extra exhaust system for regular vanagon, extra cat, extra
oxygen sensor, two extra sets of plug wires, spare set of alloy wheels with
hardware and center caps (stock steel wheels are installed) spare set of
tires (note: none are proper rating with reinforced sidewalls, I gave them
away with the bluestar), I think there is an extra throttle valve, so many
parts, about 4 or 5 boxes full of hardware, brackets, relays, switches, etc.
(I need to go through it all -or not)
What I need: Your best offer for the whole thing, you've got to take it all.
I will be in So Cal staying with my parents until Friday morning Aug 5 if
you would like to see it or I will be taking photos and putting them on a
hosting site with more information to follow later. I have also put this on
Craigs List.
