Hi Ed,

The front headliner of my '86 syncro westy just happens to be out
right now, I am sending you a seperate p-mail with three shots of a
tape measure showing the distance between the metal support pieces and
the inside of the roof. For the sake of the archives any anyone else
who may be curious I thought I would also post the non visual response
to the list.

1 1/2" MAY fit, but it is really really really close to the upper
limit of that space, it would certainly touch the top of the inside of
the roof, and may produce a slight bow inwards from stock. I say this
because the measuring tape of the afformentioned photographs was
preety much EXACTLY 1 1/2" between the metal support pieces, the rood,
and where the headliner would be. There was a reasonably thick piece
of yellow fibergalss insulation up there on mine which has been
removed for the photos.

That said, if the light were pretty close to the middle I doubt anyone
would notice. In addition, I have not accounted for the width you will
gain from cutting into the headliner. Albiet small, you will gain some
depth just by virtue of the hole you have to make. This was in a
Canadian '86 syncro westy, its likely most models would have a similar
gap... but make your own measurments before cutting, I'd hate to be
wrong.
