You can pretty well eliminate all that tinkering if you just start off with a rebuilt tranny, rebuilt motor, new Clutch / P-P, rebuilt front suspension, new CV joints. Over ten years I replace about every important part that could fail ............. It wasn't that expensive. Probably cost about $3,000.00 in parts with ten years and 275K miles. It helps lots to do your own labor but I still farmed out the rebuilding of the front suspension. Most non critical things like wiper motors, fresh air fan etc seemed to keep working even though they screamed, stank or screeched quite often.
