My brother had his Buick Grand National stolen from our drive in the Chicago suburbs in '89. No anti theft system, no kill switch...got away clean. Cops found it in the city the next week, no wheels and engine blown. He had dropped his car insurance 3 months before.

I don't think there are any real rules of thumb where thieves are concerned.
