Tempered hardboard is classified for exterior use. The best tempered hardboard I have found is commonly called "screen-back" due to the pattern embossed on its reverse side. It is stiffer, flatter, denser and the face seems to be much harder (wear resistant) than the run-of-the-mill variety.
