The cure to it all is to use a dish pan and just unscrew the drain cap to get your water. I'd be afraid to drink from one of those 20 year old tanks. I always carried my drinking water and I always packed perishable food in ice chest. If you wanted to get real specialized you could siphon off water through the fill port on the side of the van. I never carried a spare anything except things that might cripple the van like a failed distributor, alternator belts or fuel pump.
