You have a bad ground connection. Follow the brown wires.

Hello Listees: My '85 Vanagon failed the state safety inspection, because the right rear turn signal bulb is not as bright as it should be (or at least compared to the left rear). It seems to flash bright enough when the running/head lights are off, but dims noticeably when the running lights are turned on (and the inspector insists that all lights be left on!). Both left and right rear bulbs seem to be equally bright when the emergency flashers are switched on.

Questions-- I'm trying to track down the various related wiring connectors. The Bentley schematic shows a connector "T4a", but doesn't list where it is. It does list T4 and T4b, so are T4 and T4a the same thing?

Why would turning on the running lights affect one rear turn signal, and not the other?

The right rear lamps (brake, turn, and running) seem to share a common ground, but I don't think that is the problem, otherwise all the right rear lamps would be dimmer than the left side, correct?

My multimeter is too slow to read the voltage to the RR turn signal bulb, when the flashers are operating. So is my only other option to ohm out the wiring to that bulb, and compare to the left side?

Any other *specific* troubleshooting ideas would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail currently isn't working (message to it will bounce), but I will read responses on the Vanagon.com archives. Thanks in advance!

Cary
