I've heard of some solutions simply using Scotchgaurded canvas rolled on
a pole fastened in some manner to the drip rail when in use with a
couple poles through grommets at the corners for support.

If you put the pole (canvas rolled on it) inside a plastic pipe with a
slot down the side you could pull the canvas out through the slot for
use.  You'd need some kind of winder on the end to roll it back on the
pole inside the pipe.  Even Scotchgaurd will mildew so make sure it's
dry before rolling it up.
