The canvas can get wet, it doesn't drip into the van, from my experience, just make sure that you dry it completely out during or after your trip, or you'll get mold really quickly. And it would probably smell a bit as well.

If I am in light rain I leave the top up, but if it rains heavily I bring the top down to keep in the heat and not get it too wet.
