<<Try to get more info about the test. In Chicago they use a dyno for older vehicles, but they don't test for NOx. My '80 used to pass with no problem and its cat was hollow.       Traditional dry-gas is methyl alcohol. It can be bad for some parts of the fuel system, so I wouldn't leave it in there very long.>>

Load the almost empty tank up with HEET.

Ride with the tester and tell him the Van is going to fail. He'll ask why you think so, and tell him because it's only 80 horse, and over weight.

The Vanagon is put into a class of vehicles that have more engine, and more horses than it which weigh pretty much the same. The computer sticks it into a different HP class of vehicles.

Toyata Tercels brand new don't pass simply because they are grossly underpowered, and the tester's know this.

They have an over ride on the computer, and when they hit this reprogamming button your Van will pass with flying color's even with the cat empty.

Be sure to get into the passenger seat, and start talking with the tester.

It works every time here for me on the dyno emissions test.

Good Luck,
