Guy I knew once had a decrepit old ford van that, much to his annoyance, everyone called "The Catbox". Previous owner had it sitting in his garage for years with the side door and windows open and the neighborhood cats apparently liked to hang out in it. No amount of spraying, scrubbing, or changing the panelling/headliner/seat padding/upholstery ever got rid of that cat-ammonia smell. Had to drive with the windows down all the time. It was pretty gross. I'm guessing the dash and its contents were the source.
