Probably it would end up being cheaper and easier to wire up a simple
prox-card reader to the underside of the driver's seat and keep the
prox card in your wallet. Only problem is that it would probably kill
the engine if you put it in park at a red light and jumped to the back
seat to grab your CD folder or something. Perhaps one of those small
keytag sized HID prox "cards" on the ring with the Vanagon key, and a
small mullion reader in the dash that powers up when you turn the key
to ON and triggers a latching relay feeding the fuel pump relay.
Starting to sound like those transponder keys that give locksmiths
like me fits...
