Well so far it appears by overwhelming consensus (8 of 10+-) that 20/50 oil works well in a vanagon. My mechanic's rationale to use a lighter weight oil is that the heavier stuff does not get to the heads/lifters soon enuf to keep them adequately lubricated. Heads/lifters are expensive & are what go first, so treat them to good lubrication for longer life? Also that if your engine is on its last days then 50 wt. oil isn't going to hurt it any more than it already is so why not use it! Flame away anyone who has not beat this topic to death & then we'll talk about tires? Tom-put 10/40 dino oil in the 84!
