What I do in this situation is to wind down the driver's (or passenger's) window. Then have someone lock and unlock the door from the outside of the van while I stand at the rear hatch. As they are doing this you should hear the rear hatch lock working and as it is try pushing the button. You want the key slot to be in the horizontal position while you are trying this (unlocked). It has always worked for me as long as the rear hatch motor hasn't bitten the dust. If it has then you have to remove the rear hatch interior panel and push the button from the inside of the door to get it open (not fun but not impossible either).
