I recently had to get a card reissued because the 3 digit code was no longer readable. That was when I found out that the bank did not know that code and that it is uniquely generated at the time of the printing of the card. Your record at most local banks actually does not have that code on it. I also found out that companies that use the code to validate a card in their system are not supposed to store the code. Only the card number. Supposed to and reality are probably two different things. I have taken the new card and written the number down separately and then erased it from the back of the card.
