This is exactly the correct procedure. It happen to me once and I did the same thing over and over till I opened the lock and repaired it. Comes out it was the slider inside the lock that had moved to the opposite direction. I have power locks.

One thing you might try: instead of turning the key in the rear lock the direction it goes 90 degrees (I forget if it's clockwise or counter clockwise), turn it the OPPOSITE direction. If it turns about 15 degrees, try holding it turned like that and push in the button by pushing on the key.

A friend of mine had a similar problem with his Syncro where the rear lock motor wouldn't push the actuator all the way. By only partially turning the key cylinder we were able to get it to open the latch by "reaching diagonally", so to speak.
