I've used 20/50 the whole life of my 87 Wolfsburg, including Nevada/Death Valley in over 100 degree heat.

If your 20/50 has been working ........... keep running it. It's crank case pressure that blows seals not oil viscosity. In spite of your degree in physics and your mechanic's degree in real hard times you probably know more about your VW than him.
