To be honest, the first time I removed the dash it took about 3/4 hour,
including removing the shear bolts that hold the steering column in
place. Putting everything back together again took about 30 minutes.

2nd time round, it took me 1/4 hr to get it all out, and 1/4 hr to
restore it back together again.

Once the dash is out, removing the heater box is a piece of cake.
Splitting it is a pain in the proverbial, but it's easily epoxyed back
together again, so I really wouldn't shy back from tackling the job
"front on", so to speak!!!
