Definitely 20w-50. Almost just like it says in the owners manual. They actually call for 40 in tropical temps but the reality is the 20w-50 is a better choice now that the viscosity modifiers actually work. Also, make sure the engine is not overfilled. Mid way between the lines is good. The top mark is not the full mark. The top mark is actually the maximum do not exceed no matter what mark.

I dropped the 84 Westy off at my longtime local vw mechanic for a quick once over, fuel lines, coolant hoses, change the oil, double check my aux. battery installation, etc. before heading to see the man burn.

When I told him, I had 20/50 weight dino oil in it, he said he could do that but didn't recommend it. Thought 10/30 or 10/40 at the highest to not blow out seals, etc.

I know we have beat this to death recently, but I can't seem to access the archives. Help? What weight oil for a 1200 mile rd. trip to BFE Nevada w/ temps over 100?
