Malcolm,

All I can say is my fridge lights easier - in situ, not on a bench- with the gasket and cover intact and properly screwed down.

I love this fridge, when it works it works well, when it doesn't it makes my head hurt trying to figure it out and to remember the H2/NH3 cycle when someone asks.

Leaks into the combustion chamber will not effect the flame in any negative way, just more oxygen. Leaks in the exhaust may be a different story.

My fridge flame burns well with the cover off the burn chamber. See: http://photos.yahoo.com/mwstebbins and click on "fridge flames"
