Mat,

Get the van rolling in a parking lot, away from any cars, up to 20-25 MPH. While pushing in the release button, pull slowly up on the parking brake lever. If you get a pulsing in the lever, the rear drums are out of round. If not, check your front rotors for warping.

BTW, Volkswagens are prone to having out of round rear drums, especially if they are left parked for long periods of time with the parking brake on. It will happen to most rear drum cars, but VW's seem to get it more than others...
