Can I suspect something else, like a wheel bearing?

Hey Mat -

You can see if it is one of the rear brakes relatively easily. Using a GOOD jackstand, lift ONE rear wheel off of the ground. Start the engine, and put it in gear. While the wheel that is in the air is spinning, gently press on the brake petal. If the wheel that is spinning is the bad / warped / trashed one, you will feel it in the pedal. If you do not feel anything like what you feel on the road, then that wheel is not the culprit. Try again. The front wheels require a helper, who can spin the wheel for you by hand. Unless this is a Syncro, in which case you can use the same trick as for the rears.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHENEVER YOU TRY THIS!! CHOCKS ON THE WHEELS NOT BEING TESTED SHOULD BE CONSIDERED MANDATORY AS A SAFETY PRECAUTION, AND DON'T REV UP THE ENGINE!! JUST AN IDLE IS ENOUGH TO SPIN THE WHEELS FAST ENOUGH!!
