once the clearcoat comes off of a metallic paint, the exposed basecoat starts to fade and change pigmentation from the elements.. if you remove all the clear (wet sand - time consuming - and youll prolly wear thru the basecoat to the primer anyway) and just reclear it, youll see the splotches where the unprotected paint was as opposed to the part that still had good clear left on it. BTDT. waste of time. just respray the whole section.
