That is correct, the circlip should come off, and the square end of the cable should stay right there sticking out the end of the stub axle. I don't know what happens if you pull the cable, but I'll bet that either the other end of that cable, or the OXS mileage counter is now trashed. FWIW, I'm not a professional mechanic, but I never looked in the Bentley for this one... I saw the cable end, the circlip, and the cap, and just knew to pull the clip before pulling the cap.
