Subject: NEW Pop up Screen only install
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
Hi all
I just spent last night and installed a new screen into my 85 westis pop up. Turned out Great and most anyone wouldn't know it was not factory.
Heres what i did:
1) used quilting pins to pin in a new pc of Marine Exterior Quality Screen to the Binding tape sewn to the zipper all the way around. the Zipper on my top is in
excellent shape as was the canvas and i was way to lazy to swap out the canvas due to a bad screen.
2) Marked the edge of the screen where to Cut and Bind on Cotton Bias Tape with a Canvas Marking pencil
3) pulled all the pins and cut the screen to size, then Bound it with the bias tape on my Sewing machine with Poly marine sewing tread
4) then i Used a Latex Adhesive that bonds in 3 minutes and is water proof and the whole bit. Called tear mender.
5) Pinned all the way around the top and sides with the zipper zipped up, Glued the bottom corners in 1st then across the bottom in sections of about 4-5
inches at a time. ( I Glued to the Flap on the inside ) Took a bit of time but was worth it
6) then worked from one side to the other removing pins and gluing as I went.
7) once fully bonded and mostly dry I unzipped the screen to bring it into the van and cut out the old screen. once i removed the old screen i let it just sit
there for about 15 min or so then zipped it up and admired my workmanship.
of course it helps to own an Upholstery shop and be a marine canvas fabricator but hey i really think anyone with a bit of patience could do this on there
own. I did take pictures of the job I just don't have enough computer knowledge to put the whole thing together for others to see. if anyone wants to see the
pics they can e-mail me and i will do my best to send pics. If anyone knows how to put a how to together that would be great. I could also cut and sew the
screen for others and supply the parts and tools for the DIY. All you would need is time and patience.
c-ya and happy labor day Jonce
BTW I have put my Vanagon Sunshade Through the camping season to see if i needed to make any adjustments before offering them up to the public. I
have pics of the prototypes on my 85 westi. the sunshade is fantastic to say the least keeps the camper about 20-30 degrees cooler and allows you to look
out without others being able to see in. I made up the full set for myself and i have a Supplier lined up to supply the material and a very good price to make it
able for me to do a start up run. i should have something together real soon with some pricing. I can forward a picture or 2 to anyone interested. Just put
sunshade in the subject line and i will send off some pics. c-ya Jonce
