The torque converter does the same thing whether the trans is in reverse or a forward gear; it is probably OK. The clutches controlling the forward gears are very likely kaput. It is also possible that some valves are stuck in the valve body which hydraulically controls the trans. It can be removed and cleaned w/o removing the transmission from the van.
