Fancy that! I'll have to ask our motor rebuilder if he does starters or can 
recommend someone who does. 

The stuff you buy at the "Zone" or most any over the counter purveyor

Don't take my word for it, check out their web site. They detail EXACTLY 
what they do in "remanufacturing" starters:

commutator is machined if it's out of round, but beyond testing it, that's 
all they do with the armature.

They're a bulk rebuilder with the typical "part swapper" assembly line. They 
supply places like AutoZone and Pep Boys with adequate rebuilts. Like you 
say, rewinding is a dying art.
