hybrids improve economy by using the engine to charge the electrics so you don't have to charge from the grid. With the generating braking that also contributes.

While diesels and biodiesels and hybrids aren't the whole answer they are an improvement over straight gas engines at this point.

...something to do while looking for more solutions.
