I haven't used both per se, but I've experienced similar types of each in various RVs. Propex is forced air, and the plat cat is a radiant type heater. Radiant uses less electricity, having only a small fan feeding combustion air and venting exhaust. Forced air will heat the whole interior fairly evenly, but you can warm your hands easier in front of a radiant heater. Forced air you can squirrel away under the rear seat with only a warm air vent showing, while radiant you'll have to find a sizable exposed surface to mount it (back side of the pass. seat pedestal in a Vanagon is pretty much your only reasonable choice). I prefer the propex design, personally, but I've always benn weird about exposed radiant heaters.
