You should pull the fan shroud and sheet metal rear of the fan shroud to get to the top bolts of the engine mounts. You need to be sure which direction you put the bolts back into the mustache bar making sure they don't rest against the fan shroud and make a big growling noise from the contact. I think I had to drop my heater boxes a little also. Replace all four engine mounts NOW and get done with it. Like all VW Vanagon repairs it's twice as hard as it needs to be. Call ahead when you order your mounts so you don't get stuck in a holding pattern while the vendor waits for partds to come in. Buy from the guy that can supply all four on the first order.
