This sounds like it could be the clogged gas tank syndrome or a bad fuel
pump. A fuel pressure test is in order.

my sister's brother in law, Jeff, called me last night.. he is on a
cross
country trip from NY back to his home in SF Bay area and he has broken
down in
Kimball Nebraska.. he has a '84 westy with a new Go-Westy 1.9Lwbx
motor. the
van is having problems which seem like gas starvation problems..this
started
happening yesterday, he made it from NYC to nebraska without a hitch
till this
problem.. he filled up the van w/ gas, then drove it like 150 miles,
and the
van started to sputter and die.. he let the motor cool down, then it
started back up, he made it another 100 miles or so, then the same thing
happened
again.. oil pressure and coolant temps are fine.
a local mechanic out there got the van running again w/ starting
fluid/ether
sprayed into the intake, and drove it around the corner to his shop,
replaced
the fuel filter, just as a precautionary measure.. (not sure that this
did
anything or was even a problem) Jeff then drove for another 50 miles and
the
same thing happened again.. he called me and i asked him if the fuel
pump was
making a excessively loud buzzing or uneven noise, he said no, he
started the
van and put his hand on the fuel pump at idle, and could hear/feel it
buzzing.
basically he can start it once it cools down but can only get 50 or so
miles
out of it before it starts crapping out like a fuel starvation problem..
he has owned this van for a year and a half, and its a california van,
it made
it all the way from SF to NY on the first leg of the trip without a
problem..
He called Go-Westy but they were less than helpful about a possible
diagnosis. His wife was traveling with him on the trip, with their baby,
and 2
dogs..but he put his wife and kid on a plane back to cali because their
baby was
sick. so he and the dogs are stranded in nebraska.
any ideas? i thought it may be the fuel pump, but it seems to be
buzzing..
anyway he is in kimball nebraska now.. any listers local to that area?
or
if anyone could give him further assistance over the phone with things
to
check, it would be greatly appreciated.. his name is jeff and his cell
