Many moons ago I sold a Saab 96 to a long time Saab owner. While we were working out the details (and after the price was set), he mentioned that he had over 150 Kmi on the clutch in the Saab he owned and most of the miles were put on commuting into Philly. The trick he used was to slide the trannie into neutral without using the clutch as he approached a stop. He reasoned that he was saving the clutch one instance of slipping friction faces each time he did. I guess it worked for him. He said that he probably had to do brake jobs more frequently, but, like you, he felt that it was worth it compared to replacing the clutch.
