Don, I have only had to do this twice in 8 years, once when replacing a damaged Hall sender to idle stabilizer cable and once when I put in a rebuilt distributor. As I remember, spring wire clip lifts out and away from the distributor. Unless you are replacing a damaged cable and/or known bad distributor, I don't see any reason to touch the cable. If van is not running right, probably several other causes.
