Subject: 1966 Westfalia Campmobile sold for $99,000

So how much is a Westy in good condition worth?

As reported by Keith Martin in the Market section of the September 12, 2005 Autoweek on page 23:

Gooding & Co. Pebble Beach, Calif Aug. 21 1966 Volkswagen Westfalia Campmobile Beige with gray vinyl interior, A42 Westfalia option camper package including sink, stove and fold-down seats. Roof rack, no pop-up room, 22,000 original miles, meticulously maintained since new (bus was washed and covered in blankets after every outing). All paperwork including will of original owner asking his neighbor, to whom he bequeathed the vehicle, to take good care of it. Without doubt the best original Westie in the world.

Sold at $99,000 This bus crossed the auction block just after the Ferrari NART Spyder that brought $3.96 million. No one would have been surprised if in the afterglow of the Ferrari the bus had brought, say, $50,000. But one phone bidder and one very determined woman in the auction tent wanted this piece badly. The result is an auction company's and seller's dream, not to mention the fulfillment of a dream for the buyer too, and, we assume at a price she could easily afford.
