An interesting thing has happened around here recently since some of my neighbours and co-workers have begun to notice that I have not one, but two Westies (and as of this weekend, both actually run... yahoo!!! :-) Anyway, last month I get back from camping and notice one of my co-workers has a very nice '84 Westy. I wouldn't have thought them the type, but it turns out they had one about 15 years ago, and with the kids grown up, got the bug again. Last spring, another co-worker, who was retiring, asked if I was selling my '82. Again, didn't seem the Westy type, and I've known him for 25 years. Then, on the weekend, another co- worker and neighbour mentioned they were looking for one, again not people I would have guessed as Westy types, but it seems his parents had one. This is in addition to all the people who I know have, or used to have, or are looking for a Westy that I knew of. My point is VW did an amazing job of producing an uniquely practical vehicle that played a role in *many* more lives than we (and especially they) realize, and they have simply let go of it, at least in North America. Until they grab it back, our Westies will continue to see unprecedented demand and rising prices. If that's not a marketing opporunity, I don't know what is.
