Yeah, I left San Diego on Saturday morning, up US 395 (strong tailwind)
as far as Lone Pine the first night. Through Bishop (with a side trip
to Lake Sabrina for a looksee--nice!), then past Mammoth Lakes up to Lee
Vining (topped off the tank at $3.59 a gallon for 87 Octane...ugh!)
Took 'er nice and easy up to the top of Tioga Pass (9,800+ feet) and
into Yosemite high country. Camped at White Wolf campground (many
campgrounds had space available, very rare for a holiday weekend, guess
the high gas prices scared folks away); in the morning, there was about
1/8" of ice on the surface of a pot of water I had left out...CHILLY!
Also that morning had a big black bear leisurely ramble down the
campground road right in front of my van (I was still inside); those
bear warnings are for real!
Down into Yosemite Valley, always wonderful. Then, basically headed
back home, south on 99 and 5. A great 4-day road trip. Lots of
Vanagons throughout the trip to wave to, California is full of them.

Any listmembers driving on US 395 near Mammoth Mtn. last week? I saw a
couple of Westfalias traveling together, and passed a Nevada-plated
Syncro with canoe/kayak on top. Waved at the guys in the Syncro even
though we were riding in my friends' 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser (Syncro
was parked at Rock Creek Lake south of Mammoth). (They were checking
out the Land Cruiser; for some reason this particular model of Land
Cruiser is rather rare.)
Also saw a Burner on his way to the Burn at the Von's in Bishop. Also
saw somebody living in a first-generation Transporter in the Von's vast
parking lot. That parking lot is so big that probably only a VW nut
like me even notices.
