my van has been getting slower and slower over the last few months. it sounds and smells fine, idles properly, and consumes no fluid. but it is a DOG going up hills. i'm thinking ignition system, fuel supply, or severe engine damage from when i ran out of coolant last spring (oops). my mechanic (frey's in boulder) went through everything yesterday, and discovered that about half the cat had broken apart and was blocking the exhaust flow. he scooped it out and it runs like a top. the emissions are still okay, so i didn't need to buy a new cat just yet.

i've only had this van for a year, and it's my first vanagon. i've only driven it 7 miles back from the shop, but it felt like a rocket. i wonder if i've been driving with obstructed exhaust flow this whole time, and only recently it got much worse.

simple and cheap solutions are so refreshing.

Can't afford to put a tiger in your tank?

How about a dead kitty?
