Yeah, usually head gasket failures have more dire symptoms than just an exhaust leak, e.g. engine would run rough from the leaking cylinder's charge blowing out on the compression stroke. If it's LOUD and the car continues to run halfway decent otherwise, 99.9% sure it's an exhaust gasket; but like that mechanic who also hasn't seen/heard it in person, I'd hate to be the guy who told her "$" and have it turn out to be "$$$".
