Ahh, yes, that was it. Your correct, it does turn on, it just turns off a short while later on.

Maybe I can simply use it to warm up at night and in the morning.

Its been a while since I had my air cooled van, but I thought the BA6 could be run while the engine was off... the issue is just that the timer only allows a few minutes (ie: its not thermostatically controlled). Other issues is it can be a fuel pig and a battery hog.
